Halloween 2020
This Halloween don’t forget about your teeth!
It is exciting to go trick or treating at Halloween and get lots of lollies to eat. But don’t forget about your teeth! We believe that everything is OK in moderation. There is nothing wrong with having a few sweets every now and then. The problem with Halloween is the excess of sweets and lollies. This means you need to be more aware of what you (or your child) is eating. By following a few tips about which sweets cause more damage you can have your cake and eat it too!
Here are a few tips to minimise the damage to your teeth. This way you can enjoy the fun of Halloween while keeping your teeth happy.
- Try and avoid the sticky sweets. The length of time sugary food is in your mouth plays a role in tooth decay. The longer the sweets stay in your mouth the longer your teeth are subject to an increased risk of tooth decay. Sticky sweets like gummy bears take longer to get washed away by saliva.
- This applies to the hard sweets as well due to the length of time it takes for you to suck them.
- If you are eating sweets, then stick to water to drink.
- Save some sweets for another day.
- Wait at least 30 minutes after your last sweet before you brush your teeth, otherwise you are just rubbing the sugary food into your teeth. This can cause even more damage.
