Services Provided

Crowns

A crown fits over the existing natural tooth and replaces the natural crown, the part of the tooth which is visible in the mouth.

Crowns are required to strengthen broken teeth and prevent teeth from further fracture. They are quite often used to strengthen teeth that have had root canal treatment as these teeth are more brittle and likely to fracture. They can also improve the appearance of misshapen or discoloured teeth.

Crowns can be made of metal, porcelain or porcelain with metal inside for strength. The colour and shape can be matched to your own teeth.

The tooth is shaped so that there is room for the artificial crown to fit over the top. Preparation time will depend on how damaged the tooth is and whether it needs to be built up with a filling first.

A soft mouldable material is used to make an exact 'impressions' of the tooth that is to be crowned and the nearby teeth. A dental technician uses the impressions to make the crown the exact height and size needed.

A temporary crown made of plastic is glued to the tooth until the permanent crown is made. You can chew on a temporary crown but it won't be as strong as the finished one. When the crown is ready, the temporary one is removed and the permanent one put it its place.

Fixed Bridges

A bridge may be used to replace one or more missing teeth. They can restore the lost teeth, support remaining teeth and help keep the remaining teeth in a correct position. A bridge can help prevent the cycle of problems that occur when just one tooth is missing, such as shifting and drifting of remaining teeth, decay and periodontal bone

Bridges are made of metal and porcelain or sometimes just porcelain. The colour of the bridge teeth can be matched to the colour of your own teeth.

The teeth that will support the bridge are prepared in a similar way to preparing a tooth for a crown.

An impression of the teeth and any gaps is taken, and the dental technician uses this to make the bridge. A plastic temporary bridge or temporary crown may be fitted in the meantime.

At your final visit, the dentist will check that the bridge fits and then cement it permanently in place.

Dental Implants

Dental implants are titanium posts which are inserted into the bone to replace missing teeth. They serve as a tooth root substitute. The bone around the implant integrates with the implant thread and creates a strong foundation. It is possible to have more than one tooth replaced and this might involve having more than one implant. Implants can also be used to stabilise dentures.

Patients need to have healthy gums and enough jawbone to support the implants together with the replacement teeth. They must also be prepared to maintain good mouth hygiene and visit the dentist regularly.

Implants can involve undergoing surgery twice or more over a period of several months. Once the surgery is performed and the bone has integrated successfully, we can now restore your implant with a crown at Canberra Dental Care.

Replacing your missing teeth will not only benefit your facial appearance but also your oral and general well-being. Once a missing tooth is replaced you will be able to eat and speak as you did previously - things that people often take for granted until their natural teeth are lost.
